New Zealand Pounamu carved Mania Koru pendant, smoothly polished finish. Design and carved by New Zealand master carver Ross Crump.

The mania is one of the most well known traditional Maori symbols.  It is usually depicted with the head of a bird, the body of a man, and the tail of a fish. It is a spiritual guardian, a guardian angel, to ward off danger and protect against evil.
